<p style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 35.4pt;" class="MsoNormal">Michael Bakunin inicia <em style="">Deus e o Estado</em>, com a seguinte pergunta: “Quem está certo, os idealistas ou os materialistas?”. Porém, ele não está realmente colocando esta dicotomia em questão, ao contrário, ele continua o texto dizendo que não é preciso pensar duas vezes, obviamente os materialistas estão certos, e ponto final. Tal convicção era comum entre os pensadores do século XIX. Ao dizer isso Bakunin estava concordando com todos os outros grandes pensadores da época, de Proudhon a Karl Marx. Ser materialista no século XIX era quase uma questão de princípios.</p><br />

Numa sociedade baseada na dádiva ao invés da barganha, as necessidades são satisfeitas sem que ninguém tenha que negociar e sem que haja uma estrutura de valores controlando o conflito entre gastos e ganhos. Esta competição se torna desnecessária, e de fato a competição intra-espécie não é natural, mas cultural, e sintoma de má adaptação ao meio. Não é resultado de nossa evolução, mas sim de contingências criadas por nós para certos propósitos. Propósitos que, por mais que tenham se infiltrado profundamente na estrutura de nossa sociedade, podem e devem ser criticados.<br />Onde tudo é dado não há espaço para o conceito civilizado de propriedade. Pois ainda que algo tenha sido confiado a alguém, não é próprio de desta pessoa. É primeiramente uma relação entre ela e aquele que a presenteou. Algo dado só se torna propriedade quando se torna realmente próprio do ser, e não pode mais ser tirado dele por qualquer meio. Por exemplo, quando o alimento é comido se torna parte das propriedades ou atributos do ser. Ao instituir que objetos externos podem ser considerados como propriedades de uma pessoa, como uma extensão de seu ser, é como se nos tornássemos seres assimiladores. Assim, crescemos na medida em que conquistamos coisas. O conjunto de coisas que temos e torna cada vez maior, e na medida em que nossa dependência desses objetos cresce, cresce também nossa dependência de sistemas mais efetivos de acumulação, o que nos torna mais parecidos com máquinas e menos parecidos com seres vivos.<br />Tornamo-nos mais mecânicos que orgânicos porque, se os objetos que acumulamos fazem parte de nós, somos compostos de partes sem relação orgânica, pois objetos físicos não têm relação orgânica entre si. The first written myth of this culture is Gilgamesh going in and deforesting those hills to make cities. When you think of the plains and hillsides of Iraq is the first thing that you think of Cedar forests so thick that sunlight never touches the ground? That's how they were. The first written myth of this culture is Gilgamesh going in and deforesting those hills to make cities. When you think of the Arabian peninsula is the first thing that you think of Oak forests? That's what it used to be. Let's move a little bit West and you get the Cedars of Lebanon, and they still have one on their flag. I never can remember if it was Plato or Aristotle, I think it might have been Plato who was commenting on how deforestation was destroying the springs and rivers in Greece.
